Istanbul (IPak Tv News) Significant progress has been made in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul. Russia says it will reduce military activity in Kyiv and Chernihiv after talks with Ukraine.
Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin said the move was aimed at “building trust” in the talks.
On behalf of Ukraine, the negotiators said they were ready to agree on a neutral position, which is one of Russia’s main demands. This is only possible if an international agreement is signed under which other countries act as guarantors of Ukraine’s security.
“We want an international system of security guarantees where the guarantor countries will act as per NATO Article 5 – and even more strongly,” David Braun, a Ukrainian negotiator, told reporters.
Braun said a meeting between the Ukrainian and Russian presidents was possible and that a full peace agreement with Ukraine was needed before any final agreement could be reached with Russia.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said talks at the palace on the Bosphorus Strait were “the most important development” since the start of the war between the two countries.
The move “sends a message to Ukrainians that Russia has no plans to send large numbers of troops or occupy Kyiv in the future.”
In a speech before the talks, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told the delegations that he had a “historic responsibility” to stop the fighting and that this development would pave the way for a meeting between the leaders of the two countries.
